Review: Par38/par30 lamp clamp fixture (white)

I was in the market for a new fuge lighting solution and decided to take a look at Coral Compulsions Fuge Bulb. I had heard such good things about it and I saw it in person at the Janesville Swap that Daisy and I attended. I decided to pick one up at the last CMAS swap earlier this year. The Fuge Bulb sat in the closet, as I did as a child. I just couldnít find the time to get this bulb going. So whatever.

Eventually I began my search for a mounting solution but I couldnít find one that was discreet, versatile and economical. People advised me to get one of those huge silver spotlights with the clamps but that ginormous monstrosity would take up too much space in my already crammed cabinet and it was just plain ugly, offensive and FOUL. Jaime found a light socket that was corded but it was for another bulb. He was no help at all, of course. UGH.

I saw the write up on Coral Compulsionís new white bulb mounts on the internet blogs and I even posted it in his section of the Sponsorís area. I thought it was pretty slick but DAMMN was it more money then I wanted to spend. So I continued my search for some way to get this bulb hanging in there. Of course I found nothing.

So earlier this week I decided to just pay the pied piper and get one of these overpriced light bulb arms with a clamp. I PMed Jimmy and let him know that I knew that he worked downtown and usually took Metra to get downtown from Lisle. There was no need to explain how because that is my business. We made arrangements, and set a time for the drop.

Today I received my light mount via his amazing curbside delivery at my office building. I threw the cash into his car through the passenger window and ran upstairs. After I caught my breath and regained my composure before my colleagues I realized that this mount had quite a bit of heft to it. This was a solid piece of equipment and not the typical gooseneck lamp mounts we typically see in college dorms. This thing was built Lexus tough and I could easily hit someone in the head and knock a man out before I dragged his body into the alley. The plastic coating around the metal coils was really thick.

As soon as I got home I threw my sofa onto the other side of the room and mounted this bad boy in there. It attached to the wall of my rimless sump with 3 screws and there was no sag in the gooseneck at all. I made a few adjustments and wrapped the cord and attached it to the roof of my cabinet with Velcro that I have installed in there and plugged it in. This setup was nice and clean and exactly what I wanted.

Iím thoroughly impressed with the quality of the light mount and I feel it is definitely worth the price he is asking. I know there are other much cheaper, uglier, ghetto options out there but Iím very much into maintaining the aesthetic of my home and tank setup. As for the bulbÖ.we will see how it works out. If itís as good as everyone has said it is, I canít say I would be surprised. I expect it to be just as great as Coral Compulsionís bulb mount and customer service. Jimmy is the man and Coral Compulsion is a great Chicagoland Reefs Sponsor!!! Thank You!!

Just an update after a few months of use....

And I love this bulb. My chaeto growth went into superdrive and the mounting arm is still tight as I am. A little salt creep has found it's way to the heatsing of the bulb but I wipe it down whenever I remember and the bulb works like a champ. I'm glad I spent the money on the combo.
